The Art and Environment Ministry's mission is to
enhance the prayer of the St. Vincent de Paul faith community. With prayerful
reflection on the Word, A&E prepares our worship space to reflect the power
of a liturgical season. The ministry is composed of creative people who vision the possibilities of our space and caring
people who lovingly carry out that vision. There is room for everyone who would
like to contribute through their imagination, creativity, time, energy and
above all, a love for liturgy.

The bread used at St. Vincent's masses is baked by
parishioners in their own homes. The bread bakers make a unique contribution to
the life of the parish, binding themselves to the entire Body of Christ both
physically and spiritually. Bakers also work each year with the first
communicants. As of late 2003 approximately ten bakers were providing bread for
a week's liturgies each one taking responsibility once every two months. Bread
Bakers must know how to bake bread - or be willing to learn!

Children 3 to 14 participate in the Liturgy of the
Word in groups appropriate to their age, rejoining the larger assembly for the
Eucharistic celebration. Adult ministry members (parents and non-parents) lead
these groups on a rotating basis. "CLOW" members enjoy children and
take satisfaction in helping them grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Ministers offer communion to the assembly at
liturgies, take care of the plates and cups after mass, and visit homebound or
hospitalized members of the parish. Ministers also conduct prayer and communion
services in nursing homes and in one of the Philadelphia prisons. Membership is
open to mature and capable Catholics who have been members of St. Vincent's for
a year or more.

The first part of this ministry is to offer assistance
in preparing the funeral liturgy with the bereaved. The ministers need to have
a love and working knowledge of the liturgy. A booklet has been written which
clearly outlines the ordo (order of Mass) for the funeral liturgy. This booklet assists both the minister and
the family. Time is of the essence and often the minister needs to meet with
the family of the deceased within 24 hours of the death notification.
The second part of the ministry consists of
coordinating the funeral liturgy: lining up liturgical ministers, putting bread
and wine in place, welcoming the family, giving instructions to the funeral
director, etc.

The Initiation Ministry (or RICA) walks a faith
journey with adults considering membership in the Roman Catholic Church. This
includes adults who have never been baptized, Christians bapitzed in another
Christian church who want to become Catholic, and others who have been baptized
Catholic but never received First Eucharist or Confirmation.
The program usually begins in the fall, but people are
accepted throughout the year. We normally meet from 7:30 to 9 PM on the first
and third Wednesday each week from September until June. Gifts/qualities needed
to serve on the Initiation team: Prayerfulness, reasonable knowledge of
Catholic faith and willingness to learn more, good listening skills, ability to
attend meetings and work collaboratively as a team.. Members need to be fully
initiated Roman Catholics who attend Mass regularly.

Leaders of Prayer gather the assembly for worship and
then call it to prayer. At most liturgies they lead the assembly in the
Penitential Rite, the recitation of the Creed and the Prayers of the Faithful.
Each member ministers at the Sunday liturgy about twice a month, and on holy
days, at funerals and at prayer services, (e.g.. Reconciliation Services) as
needed.
Leaders of Prayer come to their ministry from the
regular practice of their own personal prayer. They are committed to fostering
a sense of warm hospitality in the assembly and to deepening the prayer of the
community through their ministry. Members are committed to building community
among themselves by attending monthly meetings where they "break open the
Word" as well as conduct business.

They read scripture selections at St. Vincent's
weekend liturgies on a rotating basis, approximately once every 5 to 6 weeks.
Ideally, the reader is one who is:
- willing to spend a great deal of time with the text
to be read, living with it and wrestling with it all week long so that they
come to the reading on Sunday convinced of it's worth and truth.
- committed to building a sense of community among the
lectors by attending quarterly lectors' gatherings.
